Introduction

4 Different industries in Colombia and the world, have been characterized by the magnitude of the assemblies of their works, the technology used and their contribution to the economic and social development of the different regions and countries.

El Paso Plant Colombia

With the installation of the largest solar energy field in the history of Colombia, the country opens the doors to the renewable energy revolution with the El Paso Photovoltaic Power Plant, located in the department of Cesar, in the northwest of the country.

The photovoltaic power plant 'El Paso' is capable of producing 176 GW per year, which would represent the fulfillment of the electricity needs of a city like Valledupar.

CLEAN ENERGY XXI. Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company dedicated to the development and operation of renewable energies around the world, with presence in Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Oceania and was in charge of the installation of the silver that in its total capacity (86.2 Mega Watt) represents 80% of the total solar energy installed in the country.

According to official reports provided by Energía Limpia XXl, the El Paso plant, from its clean energy production, can meet the energy consumption needs of approximately 102,000 thousand Colombian households, which would be equivalent to about 400,000 thousand people.

Planta El Paso in figures

  • El Paso will contribute to reduce CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by 107,000 tons annually, equivalent to what is captured by 7.6 million tons of CO2 per year.
  • The solar park covers an area of nearly 210 hectares, an area equivalent to 227 soccer fields.
  • The project investment was US$70 million and its construction took 14 months.

Three Gorges Dam in China

No one would be surprised to hear that China has something called "the world's largest" of its kind. An example of this is the world's largest glass bridge built in the Asian country. In that vein, China is now credited with building the world's largest hydroelectric dam. It is redundant, but true.

The Three Gorges Dam is the hydroelectric dam responsible for retaining and harnessing the waters of the Yangtze River, the longest river in the country, the longest in the Asian continent and the third longest in the world, hence the magnitude of the construction.

With about 22,500 megawatts and more than 2 kilometers of dam, the Yangtze River rises in the Tibetan plateau and, in its 6,300 kilometers of length, flows through Wuhan and empties into Shanghai.

The Three Gorges, located in the center of the country, is qualified as one of the mega-constructions created by mankind to produce energy.

The construction of this dam began on December 14, 1994, but its projection comes from 1919, when there was talk of implementing dams on the Yangtze River to control floods and produce energy for the country.

Jamnagar refinery in India

The oil sector is undoubtedly one of the world's economic muscles. An example of this is the Jamnagar refinery in India, which produces 1.24 million barrels per day.

Jamnagar, the largest industrial complex in the world, is located in Gujarat, western India, and covers an area of 30 million square meters, which would be something like a third of a city like London or Bombay.

Such is its magnitude that it could be said that by joining all the pipelines that make up this refinery, it would be possible to unite India from north to south.

The construction of this mega project was carried out in record time, as it took only three years to build the complex, and around 75,000 workers worked day and night to bring to life one of the most important refineries in the world.

Some characteristics of Jamnagar Refinery

  • It has the capacity to process 1,240 million barrels of oil per day. This volume is similar to the total refining capacity of the 6 refineries we have in the country.
  • Jamnagar is actually two large refineries on the same site. It is a massive manufacturing complex that also includes a petrochemical complex, a power generation plant, a port and terminal, as well as access to a pipeline network.
  • It is located in the city of Jamnagar, in the state of Gujarat. The space occupied by all the refinery facilities is even larger than London.
  • The refinery currently operates for the export of refined products.

Oil platformBerkut oil platform

Another mega project in the oil sector is the Berkut platform, not in vain called the largest oil platform in the world, since its annual production is around 4.5 million tons.

Berkut, is located on the Arkutun-Dagi site in Sakhalin, about 25 kilometers north of Sakhalin Island in the Sea of Okhotsk. With a height of 144 meters, a weight of 200,000 tons, a length of 105 meters and a width of 60 meters.

The Berkut platform was designed and built to be able to withstand the impact of waves up to 18 meters high, it was also designed to work in temperatures as low as 44 degrees below zero and can withstand the pressure of an ice layer up to 2 meters thick. Berkut, the world's largest oil platform, is also designed to withstand earthquakes of great magnitude.

The Berkut oil platform is located on the Arkutun-Dagi field in Sakhalin, 25 kilometers from the northern part of Sakhalin Island in the Sea of Okhotsk, and is considered to be the largest construction of its kind in the world.
